Trisocieties Conference Recap

Sarah Costanzo and Dr. Mallika Nocco with Sarah’s first place poster about about rock amendments and soil-water dynamics

The Conservation Irrigation Lab had a fun and productive SSSA (Soils)/ASA (Agronomy) meeting in Salt Lake City on Nov. 7-10, 2021.

We presented our work and networked with past and future collaborators across the U.S.!

Here are some highlights:

  • On Monday, Postdoctoral Researcher Dr. Gaurav Jha gave a fantastic talk titled Irrigation Decision Support System (IDSS) for the Food-Water-Energy Nexus in California during the day sessions. During the evening poster sessions, graduate student researcher Courtney Emerson presented an intriguing poster titled Microbial Communities and Nutrient Dynamics Under Salt and Water Stress in Processing Tomatoes. Undergraduate researcher Sarah Costanzo presented a poster titled Evaluating the Effects of Rock Dust, Compost, and Biochar on Agricultural Soil-Water Dynamics and took first place in her division poster contest!

  • On Tuesday, graduate student researcher Logan Ebert gave a wonderful talk titled Evaluating Sources of Error for Mapping Evapotranspiration from Remotely Piloted Aircrafts. During the evening poster sessions, Junior Specialist Andrew Gal presented a fascinating poster titled High-Resolution Evapotranspiration Modeling for Deficit Irrigation of Processing Tomatoes. Dr. Gaurav Jha Poster presented a comprehensive poster based on our new study in Ag and Environmental Letters titled Rapid Assessment of Soil Total Iron Using an Inexpensive Nix Pro Color Sensor

  • Following the conference, Dr. Mallika Nocco stayed in Utah to give an invited talk at Utah State University’s department of Plants, Soils, and Climate titled Decision support for precision, deficit, and regenerative water management and got the chance to meet with old and new potential collaborators (Aggie Air! Robots!) as well as learn about similarities between Utah and California water issues

Dr. Gaurav Jha holds the Nix Pro Color Sensor, which can be used to sense soil iron content

Courtney Emerson presents new findings on soil salinity and deficit irrigation in tomatoes

Andy Gal presents new findings on ET, yields, and deficit irrigation in tomatoes

The Pregame Show—providing each other constructive feedback to get ready to present

We hope to do this again next year!
